This year's crop of progressive furniture has been created on the basis of a common concept. A concept that draws on the original foundation of the association, a time when furniture was created in an equitable collaboration between architect and cabinetmaker now referred to as designers and manufacturers. For the past many years, SE, the Cabinetmakers' Autumn Exhibition has featured specific themes that the resulting furniture was bound by.
This year, the key theme is the equitable collaboration between designer and manufacturer. An idea that is based on equal parts design and technical know-how. Equal parts tradition and renewal. Equal parts responsibility and distribution of labour. And equal parts dedication. Therefore, the process has lasted longer than usual. And therefore, SEs entire membership, all 68 designers and manufacturers, was tossed into the air, as designers and manufacturers were matched up in pairs through a random draw. This blind-date approach has led to many new and interesting partnership constellations. Some met their assigned designer or manufacturer for the first time. Others encountered new materials and techniques. And some knew of each other but had never previously worked together on a specific project.
Creating innovative and progressive furniture, which is the main focus and purpose of SE, The Cabinetmakers' Autumn Exhibition, requires innovative working methods and modes of collaboration. FIFTY FIFTY is one possible approach. The only thematic requirement was an open mind, a capacity for dialogue, and the hours required to work together, allowing ideas to take shape and find their expression. FIFTY FIFTY represents the practical implementation of the fundamental laboratory concept, as 33 pairs of designers and manufacturers provide a platform for dialogue, knowledge sharing, surprise and innovation in Rundetaarn.
Enjoy!
