A piece of furniture is a three-dimensional shape is a sculpture?

A sculptural piece of furniture is a three-dimensional shape where function, comfort and craftsmanship are combined with a narrative and aesthetic statement. The challenge is to make it all look straightforward and effortless. To create a special impression with a special expression that also stands out in a sculptural sense.

Create a sculptural piece of furniture in the original colour of the material that will fit on a podium measuring 1 x 1 x 1 metre

That was the seemingly simple task that The Cabinetmakers´ Autumn Exhibition (SE) gave its members for this year’s exhibition. For the designers and manufacturers, a tough challenge, and for the prospective audience, a fun and appealing experiment. The results are shown at Thorvaldsens Museum, Denmark’s oldest museum building, which was designed especially to hold the original models for sculptures that Bertel Thorvaldsen created for various countries around Europe. An unusual museum building where form and content come together as a total work of art with a dazzling abundance of coloured walls, beautiful friezes, impressive stucco ceilings and exquisite mosaic floors. Therefore – and out of respect for architect Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll´s distinctive building - this year’s exhibition is highlighting sculptural form and opting for a subdued colour scheme. Allowing both the museum and the sculptural furniture to look their best.

Once again, The Cabinetmakers´ Autumn Exhibition is looking forward to present the innovative marvels that the association’s designers and manufacturers have created together. This year’s sculptural theme may be one of the association’s most challenging for the performers to date, and everyone has put in an intense effort to meet the requirement of the task: combining the aspects of function, comfort and craftsmanship in a sculptural and aesthetic whole. See the innovative sculptural furniture experiments created by this year’s guest exhibitors, designers and manufacturers, when 41 fantastical prototypes unfold in the museum halls this November.
